The Jimmy McDaniels Foundation is a national nonprofit organization committed to supporting higher educational opportunities for minority instrumental musicians and raising awareness of the unselfish contributions to the history of American music. Founded in the memory of musician James “Jimmy” McDaniels, the mission of The Jimmy McDaniels Foundation is to encourage minority instrumental musicians who reside in Indianapolis, Indiana and Birmingham, Alabama and to provide educational grants that will inspire recipients to enrich their communities and music profession.

The foundation’s first step was to establish a scholarship at Butler University in Indianapolis,Indiana. This scholarship will benefit instrumental students studying in the School of Music in the Jordan College of Fine Arts. A similar effort is underway at Miles College in Fairfield, Alabama for students enrolled in The Miles College Music Program.

"Through your thoughtfulness, the name of Jimmy McDaniels and his high standards for performance will motivate students for years to come."

Bobby Fong, President, Butler University -2000-2010

Today more than ever, scholarships are essential to attracting and retaining top talent to the University.  The Jimmy McDaniels Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) tax exempt public charity, will award annual College scholarships to students pursuing instrumental music and education degrees in Indiana and Alabama.  In October 2009, The Jimmy McDaniels Scholarship was established at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana which will benefit instrumental students studying in the School of Music in the Jordan College of Fine Arts.  A recent joy in December 2011, The Willie Viola Selden McDaniel Music Scholarship was initiated at Miles College in Birmingham, Alabama.

The Jimmy McDaniels Foundation has commissioned and unveiled a traveling exhibit based on the extraordinary life and career of Jimmy McDaniels, The Leader of the Band, so titled in remembrance of one of his beloved nicknames, opened in August 2010 at Butler University’s Irwin Library and will travel across the country before taking residence at its permanent home, The Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in Birmingham, AL
